United National Party should contest the forthcoming general election alone, its Working Committee decided at a special meeting this morning.

 

Furthermore, the Working Committee delegated party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe the power to appoint the nomination board.

 

Meanwhile, the Working Committee decided that a special party convention should be held following the dissolution of the Parliament, UNP Media Spokesman Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said.

 

This decision to stand alone in the election ended long term speculations on whether the UNP would contest the election alone or as part of an alliance.
