Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Monday (31) asserted that Kumar Gunaratnam, the leader of the Frontline Socialist Party, was never a member of the JVP.

Particpating in the 'Salakuna' political talk show program aired by Hiru TV, Dissanayake firmly stated that he was not aware of an individual named Kumar Gunaratnam was engaged in political activities with JVP.

"There were various stories on media about JVP leaders and members. However most of them are not true. So I can assure that there never was a Kumar Gunratnam in the JVP, "he stressed, answering the questions raised by journalists.

Dissanayake insisted that he was not aware of a Kumar Gunaratnam even when he was participating in the activities of the JVP students' union.

However during ITN 'Sathyagaraya' program earlier this year Dissanayake had accepted that Kumar Gunaratnam played a certain role within the party. He insisted that Gunaratnam’s brother Ranjitham was a key member of the JVP. Dissanayake refused to reveal more details about Kumar Gunaratnam saying that the party has a 'political responsibility' on such topics.

However, according to many other accounts, Kumar Gunaratnam was the Trincomalee District leader of the JVP during the 1987-89 insurgency. During 1988-89, Gunaratnam functioned as the Trincomalee leader of Deshapremi Janatha Viyaparaya (DJV), effectively the JVP armed wing. He allegedly masterminded the JVP attack on the Pallekele army camp and IPKF camp at Kallar.

Gunaratnam’s team was known as the only JVP team which had attacked the IPKF.

He broke away with a faction of JVP members in 2011. Later they formed new Marxist party named Frontline Socialist Party (FLSP). Gunaratnam left for Australia afterwards and returned on January 01, 2015 during the presidential election on tourist visa. His current whereabouts are kept a secret. However, the FLSP insists that he remains in the country.

However not only Dissanayake, but many JVP leaders have previously denied the existence of a party member named "Premakumar Gunaratnam"
The full list of the newly elected Members of Parliament was Gazetted last night.

The Gazette Notification includes the names of the 196 MPs elected through district based proportional representation.

Their full names, parties and the districts are indicated in the Gazette Notification.

Ninety three MPs were elected from the UNP while UPFA managed to elect 83. The rest included 14 TNA MPs, 4 JVP MPs. one EPDP MP and one SLMC MP.

Prominent lawyer Chrishmal Warnasuriya expressed his frustration at the decision taken by the JVP to appoint a losing candidate through the national list.

Warnasuriya was listed at number 2 in the national list submitted to the Elections Commissioner in July. The JVP's decision to appoint Sunil Handunnetti through the national list deprived Warnasuriya of a parliamentary seat.

Updating a status on his Facebook profile, Warnasuriya addressed party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and said that he was forced into a difficult position by the decision of the party.

"I sincerely hope that you had a REASON for doing what you just did, I am deeply perplexed as none have been explained to me! However, now that you have taken this step, I will expect you to appreciate that I too will have to EXPLAIN all of this to the many who supported us, and who are now inquiring of me - WHY?" Warnasuriya said.

However, speaking to Asian Mirror earlier today, JVP National Organiser Bimal Rathnayake said that the decision was taken following strong demands from party members and individuals in the national list. Many national list members also supported the idea of appointing a party member as a national list MP, Rathnayake claimed.

He also added that there was no dispute within the party on the matter.

However, Warnasuriya's outburst on Facebook stands contrary to Rathnayake's claim.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) National Organizer Bimal Rathnayake on Thursday (20) stated that the party decided to name Sunil Handunnetti as a national list MP because of strong requests made by both JVP supporters and national list candidates.

When asked about the controversial reports regarding the national list appointments, Rathnayake told Asian Mirror that many national list candidates requested to name a full-time JVP member as national list MP.

Therefore the party decided to name Sunil Handunnetti and former Auditor-General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne as national list MPs after a discussion, Rathnayake said.

He also asserted that there was no spilt inside the party over the national list nominations as claimed by certain media reports.

The JVP named former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti and former Auditor-General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne as its national list MPs today (20).

Mayadunne led the list submitted to the Elections Commissioner by the JVP on July 13. Handunnetti contested the election from Matara District and but failed to enter the parliament.

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Politburo Member K.D. Lalkantha refuted rumors that he resigned from the Western Provincial Council due to an internal party crisis.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, he said that he submitted the resignation on August 10 but no public announcement was made until today.

Lalkantha said that he resigned in order to engage in important tasks and responsibilities delegated by the party. He said that there was a common task of defeating Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family rule. He argued that the most important tasks began after the defeat of Rajapaksa.

The next task of the JVP is to achieve social reform, and it needs the mobilization of different social forces, Lalkantha said, pointing out that he is entering national politics to mobilize these forces.

Lalkantha said that he would not be able to do justice to the district and the province if he continues to be a Western Provincial Council member. Therefore, he decided to give the opportunity to another party member, he said.

Meanwhile, he said that there was no dispute over the appointment of national list MPs. The party took the best decision on the matter, he said.

The JVP named former Parliamentarian Sunil Handunnetti and former Auditor-General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne as its national list MPs.

Mayadunne led the list submitted to the Elections Commissioner by the JVP on July 13. Handunnetti contested the election from Matara District and but failed to enter the parliament.

There was a strong campaign by some JVP supporters demanding the appointment of Handunnetti through the national list. There was another demand to appoint K.D. Lalkantha through the list. The party politburo was reportedly divided over the matter and ended up in a compromise.

Serious divisions have reportedly arisen within the JVP on the appointment of its two national list MPs.

The politburo reportedly is divided over the appointment of two national list MPs as there is serious demands to appoint two defeated candidates K. D. Lalkantha and Sunil Handunnetti.

Those who oppose this move criticize the demand to appoint defeated candidates to national list, insisting that such moves would tarnish the image of the JVP which stood for good governance and democracy.

As per the list sent to the Election Commissioner, former Auditor General Sarath Chandrasiri Mayadunne and prominent lawyer Crishmal Warnasuriya are at number one and two of the national list.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna and the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) have agreed to offer their support to the next government in order to achieve ‘good-governance principles’, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe said on Tuesday (11).

Taking part in the ‘360’ political talk show on TV Derana, Wickremesinghe said that the JVP and the TNA will stay within the principles of their parties. However, they will support the next government when it comes to establishing democracy and good governance and introducing permanent solutions to the problem of racism, the PM added.

However, Wickremesinghe also said that the UNP will win a majority in parliament.

Meanwhile, Wickremasinghe also claimed that the LTTE asked for a bribe from him in 2005 to order the people in the north and the east to not to vote for Mahinda Rajapaksa. However he refused their request, Wickremesinghe said.

He alleged that Rajapaksa bribed LTTE twice. The LTTE became stronger by buying modern weapons and recruiting new carders using the money Rajapaksa gave, Wickremesinghe said.

Rajapaksa, however, has repeatedly denied the allegations on his links with the LTTE.

Furthermore, Wickremesinghe added that contrary to his claims, Rajapaksa promised the Indian Prime Minister to devolve power according to the 13th Amendment.

Wickremesinghe added that he will never agree to a solution which could do any harm to the sovereignty of the country.

A systematic campaign is underway to sabotage the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna election campaign, the JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath alleged today.

Speaking at a press conference at the party headquarters, Herath said that false rumors have been spread about the party.

Furthermore, falsified documents are also being circulated, he said. These documents include false versions of the JVP election manifesto, Herath pointed out.

The JVP recently filed a complaint on a Facebook page spreading false information while pretending to be an official page of the party.

Frontline Socialist Party Propaganda Secretary Pubudu Jayagoda said that the preference votes obtained by candidates who are elected to the parliament will transform into money in the event of a hung parliament.

Speaking at a meeting recently, he said that both the UNP and the UPFA have realized the possibility of a hung parliament. In that event, some candidates from both parties are preparing to crossover for money, he claimed.

The higher the preference vote, higher will be the price they will demand, Jayagoda added.

Meanwhile, the JVP was preparing to prop-up a future UNP government, he also said, pointing out that the JVP has already rejected any deals with the UPFA. It has expressed the willingness to support any other government from outside, Jayagoda said.

Certain JVP national list members are already campaigning for the UNP, he added, pointing out that former Auditor General Sarath Chandra Mayadunne is campaigning for Justice Minister Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe. Another lawyer in the JVP national list is in the campaign of UNP candidate Upul Shantha Sannasgala, he said.
