Special Parliamentary Session To Approve Civil Society Members For Constitutional Council

A Special Parliamentary session will be held to approve the civil society representatives for the Constitutional Council. The date will be decided by the Speaker today.

The parliament was scheduled to be convened on June 9. However, it is expected that it will be convened before that date to decide on the three representatives to the Constitutional Council.

Four members of the Constitutional Council were named earlier this week. Accordingly, Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka was named to the Council as the President's representative. Minister Wijedayasa Rajapakshe was named as the Prime Minister's nominee and John Seneviratne was named as the Opposition Leader's nominee. Meanwhile, Tamil National Alliance (TNA) MP R. Sampanthan was named as the representative of minority parties.

It was earlier reported that former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Radhika Coomaraswamy and former Auditor General S.C. Mayadunne will be appointed to the CC. However, there has been no confirmation on any of the three civil society members in the Constitutional Council so far.
