Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa endorsed the request by both sides of the parliament that it should be dissolved a short while ago.

He made this comment when MPs of both sides of parliament expressed that the parliament should be dissolved and elections should be called for as soon as possible.

However, it is the President who has the authority to decide on the dissolution of the parliament.

Alternatively, according the 1978 Constitution, the parliament can decide to dissolve itself. However, this has never happened before.
