President Has To Dissolve Parliament: Gunawardena

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna leader Dinesh Gunawardena said that President Maithripala Sirisena has no other option but to dissolve the parliament after what happened in the House yesterday.

Taking part in the ‘Mahajana Sevaya Pinisayi’ talk show on Swarnavahini, Gunawardena pointed out that both the government and opposition had requested for the dissolution of parliament. Thereafter, even the Speaker said he favored dissolution, Gunawardena said.

He pointed out that once the Speaker has announced a decision from his Chair, it becomes a decision of the parliament. If the parliament has requested dissolution, the President will have to comply, Gunawardena pointed out.

The opposition demands an election because the minority government has proven that it cannot function, Gunawardena said. This has created serious uncertainty in the country, he added.
