The Cabinet of Ministers agreed on a new electoral system after considerable deliberation last night, which included some compromises from different quarters.
The Cabinet approved the Prime Minister’s proposal that the number of seats in the parliament should not be altered. However, to assure fair representation on Proportional Representation system, it was agreed that only 125 MPs should be elected through the First Past the Post system. Meanwhile, 75 MPs will be selected through District PR and 25 MPs will be elected through the national list.
Furthermore, the two ballots system was discarded on the grounds that it will complicate the system. The president assured a fair representation of the minorities.
The Legal Draftsman was assigned to prepare the new draft of the 20th Amendment. It is expected to be presented within four days.
It was also agreed that the forthcoming general election will be held under the present system.
