The Cabinet approved an electoral system with 237 MPs, Minister Palani Digambaran told Asian Mirror.
This decision was taken at the special Cabinet meeting which was held this morning. The new electoral system will have 145 MPs elected by the first-past-the-post system, he added.
Meanwhile, 55 MPs will be elected by Proportional System. Another 37 will be elected through the national list.
Following this approval, the 20th Amendment Bill will be Gazetted tonight and it will be presented to the parliament as soon as possible, Digambaran added.
Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had earlier called for an electoral system with 225 MPs. However, it was met with strong opposition by many political parties.
