Former leader of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Somawansa Amarasinghe confirmed that his new political party will be launched by the end of this month.
Speaking to Asian Mirror, Amarasinghe said that he aims to build his party and also unite progressive forces in the country into one front.
When asked if the JVP was not a progressive party, Amarasinghe said that it could still be termed as a progressive party. However, it is in the bottom tier of such parties, he said. If not, the JVP has to act when there was a conspiracy in the country, he argued.
However, the JVP is currently adopting a ‘wait and see’ policy, similar to its policy after the presidential election in 2005. Its ‘wait and see’ policy backfired after 2005, and will backfire now as well, Amarasinghe said.
When asked if he was not responsible as the leader of the party for its wait and see policy after the Presidential Election in 2005, Amarasinghe said he is collectively responsible as a past member of the party. However, within the party, he fought against that policy, he said.
Amarasinghe claimed that there was a threat to President Maithripala Sirisena’s life. Certain elements want to take the country to anarchy, he also alleged.
