Minister Gayantha Karunathilaka received the highest number of preferential votes in Matara District while Vajira Abeywardena of the UNP came a close second.
However, the UPFA won seat seats in the district. Chandima Weerakkodi received the highest number of preferential votes.
The UNP received a total of 5,098,916 votes and won 93 seats (excluding the national list), thereby becoming the largest single party in the next parliament. The UPFA won 4,732,664 votes and won 83 seats. The ITAK won 14 seats while the JVP could manage only 4 seats. The EPDP and the SLMC won 1 seat each.

The UNP won the Gampaha District with 577,004 votes while the UPFA managed to obtain only 547,958 votes.
Therefore the lead by the UNP is 27,046 votes.
The JVP also polled 87,880 votes and it won one seat.
In 2010, the UPFA won the Gampaha District with 589,476 votes. The UPFA won 12 seats in 2010. The UNP polled 266,523 votes and won 5 seats. Meanwhile, the DNA, which included the JVP, won one seat in 2010.
TNA Spokesman Suresh Premachandran lost his seat from Jaffna District even though five TNA members won the election under the ITAK ticket.
Meanwhile, Douglas Devananda of EPDP and Vijayakala Maheswaran of UNP retained their seats.
The list of ITAK members elected include S. Sritharan, ITAK leader Mavai Senathirajah and MA Sumanthiran.
The United National Party won the Colombo District with 640,743 votes (53%) while the UPFA received 474,063 votes.
Meanwhile the JVP won 81,391 votes.
The UNP won 11 seats and the UPFA won 7. The JVP won one seat.
The Democratic Party and the Bodu Jana Peramuna failed to win any seats in the district.
The UNP won the Mahanuwara District with 440,761 votes (55.57%). winning 7 of the 12 seats in the district.
The UPFA received 309,152 votes (38.98%) and won 5 seats from the district. The JVP received 30,669 seats but did not win any seats.
In 2010, the UPFA won the district with 339,819 votes and won 8 seats. The UNP received 192,798 votes, winning 4 seats.
The UNP received 151,013 votes from Digamadulla District, winning 4 seats from the district.
The UPFA received 89,334 votes and won 2 seats while the ITAK received 45,421 votes, winning one seat.
No other party won a seat in Digamadulla.
Former UPFA MP Dullas Alahapperuma received 105,404 preferential votes from Matara District, thereby leading the preference votes in the district.
Buddhika Pathirana leads the UNP list with 98,815 votes.
The UPFA won 5 seats in the district and the UNP won 3 seats.
